USPS whistleblower warns mail-in voting system could disenfranchise millions ahead of 2026 midterms

Two months before the 2026 US midterm elections, a whistleblower has warned that the United States Postal Service (USPS) developed computer systems 'in secret' and in a 'sloppy and rushed' manner to comply with an executive order by President Donald Trump that imposes stricter rules on mail-in voting. The systems, which are meant to verify voters against a federal list, could result in millions of Americans not receiving their mail-in ballots in time or at all. The warning was revealed by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal in a letter to USPS Postmaster General David Steiner, demanding explanations by Friday. The whistleblower's identity is protected by Whistleblower Aid. The USPS said it is carefully reviewing the concerns. The executive order, signed in March, has been challenged in court; a federal judge recently suspended it again, saying states cannot comply in time for the November 3 elections. Nearly a third of voters voted by mail in 2024.
