UK military veterans told to repay thousands due to pension clerical errors

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that more than 1,000 retired service personnel are being pursued for debts resulting from pension overpayments caused by clerical errors. The majority, 335 veterans, were overpaid a total of £5.1m due to incorrect National Insurance calculations. Other errors relate to Pension Sharing Orders, Early Departure Payments, and State Pension Age. Veterans like Ray Lawton and Andrew Thorburn have had their pensions reduced significantly and face financial hardship. The MoD says it has a responsibility to recover taxpayer funds but will do so sensitively. Some veterans have had debts wiped after complaints, and the Forces Pension Society is advising affected individuals. The administration company Equiniti and technology firm Sopra Steria are involved, with Sopra Steria stating the errors originated before they took over the contract.
