Sony Music and Warner Music sue Anthropic over alleged copyright infringement in AI training

The music publishing branches of Sony Music and Warner Music have sued Anthropic in U.S. federal court in California, alleging that the company pirated hundreds of song lyrics and sheet music from artists including The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Michael Jackson to train its Claude AI models. The lawsuit, filed on Friday, seeks damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work and an injunction. This is part of a broader wave of copyright lawsuits against AI companies. Anthropic has denied the allegations, stating it will defend itself robustly and that its use constitutes fair use. The company previously settled a similar class action with authors for $1.5 billion.
