DRC: Ebola fears grow as children return to school

Children across the Democratic Republic of the Congo are returning to school on Tuesday as the country battles its largest Ebola outbreak on record, prompting concern among parents and teachers in the worst-hit province of Ituri. Government figures showed 6,041 confirmed cases and 2,911 deaths as of August 31, surpassing the previous worst outbreak (2018-2020). Six of 26 provinces are affected, with Ituri as the epicentre (4,802 confirmed cases as of August 26). In Bunia, parents question the reopening, fearing close contact and inadequate safety measures. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists. The government has implemented a risk-based approach: in high-risk areas, pupils study from home using printed materials and radio programmes, while other areas continue with precautions. Teachers' unions demand minimum health standards before reopening. Education officials have trained staff in Ebola prevention.
