Belgian mayor blocks Europa League match against Israeli club Hapoel Beer-Sheva

Union Saint-Gilloise, a Belgian football club, was scheduled to host Israeli club Hapoel Beer-Sheva in a Europa League match on October 22. The club planned to play its home games in Leuven because its own stadium in Brussels does not meet UEFA standards. However, Leuven's mayor, Mohamed Ridouani, announced on Monday evening that the city would not grant permission for the game, even if played in an empty stadium, citing public safety. Ridouani said his position was consistent with not allowing Belgium's national teams to play against Israel in Leuven. UEFA acknowledged the city's decision and stated that it is the host club's duty to find an alternative venue, with a decision expected in the coming days. Since the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023, UEFA has required Israeli clubs and national teams to play home games in neutral countries, but it is rare for away games to be moved.
