Israel shuts desalination plants due to sea turbidity, cuts southern farm water supply

Following severe sea water turbidity caused by weather, several private desalination plants in Israel were temporarily shut down. The Water Authority instructed a reduction in fresh water supply to agriculture in the south. Mekorot, the national water company, is boosting available production. Some plants are expected to resume soon. Separately, the Water Authority approved a 15% increase in fresh water quotas for agriculture for 2026, addressing drought-related shortages and a prior cut of about 90 million cubic meters. The increase aims to maintain agricultural supply and food security. The cost will be at a rate for exceeding quotas. Officials emphasize responsible water management after a drought year.
